Brexit coming your way!

19.02.2019

Darmstadt-Dieburg – The United Kingdom will presumably leave the European Union on March 29th, 2019. However, the exact conditions of the so-called Brexit are not yet known. Two possible scenarios are emerging, each of these implying different effects on British citizens in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district.

Withdrawal agreement or…

Should the United Kingdom leave the European Union with a ratified withdrawal agreement, a transitional period from March 30th, 2019 until 31st of December, 2020 would come into effect. During this time, British citizens would fully benefit from the previous Union law and thus from the freedom of movement.

…no-deal exit?

There is also the chance of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union on March 29th without any ratified withdrawal agreement. In this case, British citizens and their family members would lose the freedom of movement and be considered as third country nationals as of March 30th. All third country nationals need a residence permit when staying in German federal territory. In this scenario, however, British citizens are exempt from this requirement for a transitional period from March 30th until June 30th, 2019. During that period, they will have to apply for a residence permit at the Darmstadt-Dieburg Foreigner’s Registrations Office. Until the final decision on that application is taken, they can legally live and work in federal territory.

At this very moment, it remains unclear, which option will apply for British citizens or which legal requirements will have to be implemented in Germany.

There are currently 574 British citizens living in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. More information is available on the internet: https://www.ladadi.de/gesellschaft-soziales/migration-und-inklusion/aufenthalt/brexit.html
